Etymology

'Farm by a mere', from mere1 and tūn , with grange , grēne 2 , hall , lane , and hūs . Marton was a grange of Vale Royal abbey. The affix Over - may be from uferra 'higher, upper', but seems to be more probably the p.n. Over 170supra , since part of Marton township is in Over parish and seems to have belonged to Over township.
