This was a piece of pasture land belonging to and lying in both Leighton and Eardswick in Minshull Vernon 2247. The name is 'Matthew's water-meadow', from the OFr  pers.n. Mahieu (for Matthew , cf. the surname Mayhew ) and ēg . The same pers.n. appears in Childer Thornton 325infra .
