Etymology

From tūn 'a farm(yard), an enclosure', with an -ing- or -ing 1 formation upon an unidentified base, cf. DEPN. Dr Barnes suggests an anglicized form of the pers.n. ON  Kári , ODan  Kari , an OE  pers.n. *Cāra , *Kāra (cf. Feilitzen 126), which would produce in ME  the characteristic wk.masc.gen.sg. form Karen - (< *Caran -), whence spellings Karin -, -en -, and by analogy -ing -. This explanation means that Carrington is not a genuine -ing - p.n. Dr von Feilitzen thinks it is a true -ing - name, and that the Scand pers.n. is not a likely basis.Caryngfeld 325infra appears to be analogous.
