Etymology

Monneley Mere (110–749531), Monnerley Mere 1831 Bry, cf. Monilee 1260 Court (p), Monilegh 13 VR (p), Monilg 'E1AddCh , Monileweyord 1295Vern and Monnerley Mdw 11, 77infra . The form Mannelegh 1296 Plea (DKR xxvi45, Orm2 iii306, 363) may belong here and not to Manley 245infra . The lake is on the boundary of Barthomley, Crewe and Weston townships. The name may be 'Monn(a)'s woodland glade', from the OE  pers.n. Monn (a ) and lēah , perhaps with -ing-, v. mere 1 and geard . The geard was probably a fisc-geard 'a fish-pond, a fish-trap'. The place now gives name to Smiths Green Fm infra .
