Etymology

“The spinney,” OFr  espinei , “a place where thorn-trees grow.” Cf. “the prior and convent of St Mary and St Cross in the Spinney of Wykes” (1269 Pat). Often referred to by its Latinised name Spinetum , 'thorn-thicket.'
