Sounds Fm is Sounde c. 1135, 1184Hosp , (le ) Sund '13th ib., Chalk or Sounds Fm c. 1825 O.S. Possibly from sand , 'sand, sandy soil.'There are sand pits near by. Cf. Sound (Ch), Sonde 1274, 1282 DEPN and v. Introd. xxxiii.
