'New market-town', v. nīwe , burh . Cf. Stenton 22 'Newbury — tells of the new borough founded by Arnulf de Hesdin, its Norman lord, at the point where the road from Oxford to Winchester crossed the Kennet'. For the earlier name of the manor, v. Ulvritone infra 259.
