Etymology

'Ēadgifu's farm', v. tūn . Ēadgifu is a woman's name. The boundary-mark Eadgife gemære 984 (c. 1240) KCD 1282, 1050 (c. 1240) ib 792, 'Ēadgifu's boundary', is in this area, but cannot be associated with Eddington, v. Pt 3. Confusion between n and u in the spelling of the name may have contributed to its development into the modern form.
