Etymology

Calcot (lost), Colecote 1086 DB, 1202–3FF , 1220, 1242–3 Fees, 1291–2FF , Colecota 1185 P, Colecot '1201 Cur, Collecote 1275–6 RH, 1392 Cl. The place appears to have been near Leverton. The tithing of Leverton and Calcot was included in the civil parish of Hungerford in 1894; it had previously been in the W parish of Chilton Foliat. The name is apparently identical with Calcutt in Cricklade, v. W 42–3, where the etymology 'Cola's cottage(s)' is given. DEPN suggests 'shed where coal was kept', v. col 1 .
