Etymology

Dunmill Villa, Denne Myll 1494 Ipm, Dunnyll Pounde 1552–3DL , Dun Mill , Dun Mill Pound 1591ib , Dun Mill 1614 Hungerford. The Denne of the earliest form may be due to confusion with the neighbouring p.n. Denford 314. The forms are insufficient for etymology. The place is near the junction of a tributary stream with the R. Kennet, and the 6″ map calls the lower stretch of this tributary R. Dun. No early forms have been found for the r.n., and it is probable that it is a modern back-formation from Dun Mill . The stream is the one which rises near Bedwyn W, and its OE  name was bedewindan (W 1).
