Etymology

, cf. St Andrews or Brownsey Bay 1661 Hutch1 , presumably from the former chapel and hermitage dedicated to St Andrew built on Brownsea Island by the Abbot of Cerne in the reign of Hy 2 (Kelly) . Leland ( 1 255 ) , writing in 1535 – 43 , says ' ther is yet a chapelle for an heremite , it longid to Cerne Abbay ' ; in 1774 Hutch1 1219 it is stated that ' the chapel was dedicated to St . Andrew , of which , and the hermitage , there are no remains ' .
