Etymology

'Tract of land where a herd of horses is kept', v. stōd , land , cf. Stot Fd in Corfe C. par. supra . The form from 1385 Pat shows confusion of the second el. with lēah , cf. Isle of Purbeck supra , Swanage par. infra .
