Etymology

Claywell (SY 996843), Claywell 1667, 1728 Hutch3, Cleywoll 1332 SR (p), 'clay spring or stream', v. clǣg , wella , from a stream flowing N into Poole Harbour and forming the Studland-Corfe C. bdy here, or from the spring marked 6″ ¼ mile S, cf. Clay Pits 1826 Gre marked near here, and Clay Washing Beds and Newton Clay Works (both 6″) ¾ mile NW, cf. Newton infra .
