Etymology

'The island, the water-meadow', v. hulm ; and 'the open land at a spring', v. wælla , wælm , feld . The township consists of two manors. The form Walme - argues against a derivation from wall 'a wall', suggested by the account of a fortification here in 1725 thought to be Roman and on a Roman road from Middlewich to Astbury, v. Orm2 iii71.
