Etymology

'Market on the R. Dane', v. port 2 , R. Dane 120. Symeon of Durham, ii 93, 123, s.a. 920, reports 'Sihtric broke into (infregit ) Devennport ', v. Stenton 329–330. This suggests a town. There is neither a town nor any trace of one here now, and the place was never a borough, but the p.n. infers a commercial centre. It may have been a market-place for a Danish settlement area, v. Sagabook xiv313.
