Etymology

Deans Biggin, 1603 PR(KL), 1662RateK 6, Denysbyg (g )yng , Denisbyg (g )yng , Denysby (g )ginge 1523, 1605 Kend ii, 318, 407, Deanes biggyne , Deynesbeggyn 1553AOMB , Deynsbyggyng 1558FF . NB 247 suggests that this was named from the Deans of Kirkby Lonsdale, but W. H. Chippendale (CW xxix, 242) states that it never was church property. The first el. is probably therefore the surname Dean . v. bigging 'building'.
