Etymology

Crowther Bridge (lost), Newbridge on Lune 1647Bridges 10d, Crowder Bridge 1649 Kend iii, 25, Crowtherbridge 1685Bridges 8, Crowther als. Lune Bridge 1702 Kend iii, 125. The first el. is the surname Crowther (cf. Reaney s.n.), v. brycg . The bridge appears to be now called Lincoln's Inn Bridge; the 1647 Newbridge was between Sedbergh YW and Kendal and the 1685 reference puts it between Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale. A spot in the Lune just above the bridge is called Crowder's Leaps (i.e. 'salmon leaps'), and there is a local f.n. Crowder hill 1841TA .
