Etymology

Fingerfield, 1817 M, Tingehoucroft 12 YD viii, Tinchehoucroft c. 1150 ib. 'Hill or mound where the council met', v. þing-haugr, croft . The modern form is paralleled by Finger Lei which is of similar origin (cf. Phonol. § 49).
