Etymology

The township of Hartwith which is a detached part of this parish is included in Ripon parish (146supra ) for the convenience of the topographical arrangement. Much of the parish was in the Honour of Kirkby Malzeard (as were some parts of Ripon parish); the Honour was sometimes known as Kirkbyshire (v. 78supra ).
