Etymology

Thrope Ho, Trope 1198 Fount, 1457 FountBurs, 1461Vyner , 1496FountRent , 1511Vyner , Trope als. Thrope 1597 FF, Trop 1317 Font, 1379 PT (p), Thorp 1485Vyner , Throphouse 1540 Fount, Troop 1771 M. This is a difficult p.n. as it is not certain whether the original form is Trop (e ) or Throp (e ). The latter appears first in later sources but may well be original, the Trop (e ) spellings being due to AN influence (cf. IPN 108–9). It is therefore most probably from OE  þrop 'outlying farm', the native equivalent of ODan  þorp (cf. EPN ii, 215).
