Etymology

This must be a compound of ham(m) and a lost OE  pers. name Saca which has its parallel in certain OGer names, simple and compound, noted by Förstemann (PN 1286–7). It is connected with the common OE  word sacan , 'to engage in strife.' Doubtless from the same stem, with a jo -suffix, came the pers. name Secca which lies behind Seckington (Wa), Seccandun in ASCs. a. 755. Sake Ride in this parish probably contains the same pers. name.
