Danegate

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rotherfield

Etymology

Danegate. For this name Miss Pullein kindly gives us forms Dounegate (1428Banco ), Dengate (1528 Churchwardens Book ), Dounegate (1559), Dengat (e ) (1566, 1595), Dennegate (1625), Dungate (1721), all from Court Rolls and apparently all referring to the same place. It is clear that the first element may be either dun or denn , but which is entirely uncertain. Mr S. E. Winbolt suggests that this name and Saxonbury infra 379 were altered to fit one another in the interests of pseudo- history.
