Etymology

'Ipa's people,' v. ing , PN in -ing 59. The forms with e are AN spellings. The vowel is probably short, cf. Ipan lea (KCD 1281) and Ippanbeorh (BCS 917). For the pers. name cf. Ipicroft in Oving (1215Box ) and Ipthorne supra 13. The modern pronunciation with a long vowel is apparently a spelling one.
