Etymology

Fitzhall appears in pers. names in the forms Fitteshale (1279Ass , 1363Hollist ), Fiteshale (1279Ass ), Ficceshale (1296 SR) and as a place-name as Vyttesale (1334 AD iv), Fyteshale (1398Ct ). The cc in the 1296 form is clearly an error for tt .This p.n. contains the strong form of the unrecorded pers. name which lies behind Fiddington (So), Fittingtun in KCD 716 and Fitz (Sa), earlier Fittesho (PN Sa 103). Cf. Fizo in Förstemann (PN 507). From this pers. name is derived the diminutive Fitela found in Fittleworth infra 126. See also Fitzlea infra 26. The second element is healh , hence 'Fit's nook of land.'
