Etymology

Scallow (6″), cf. Scalewebregg (e )1385Ct , 1487Lewes Deeds , Scalewbregge , Scalwebregge 1431Ct , Skalowbrigge 1484Ct , Callowfield near Scallow Bridge 1675Ct , Scallowefeild al. Scallowebridge 1679Add . Close by was a field called Scallow Wish (1840TA ). In 1285CplM we have mention of 'a bridge at Calwebreg ' which may possibly refer to the same spot. Callow is used in Sussex in the sense 'smooth, bare' (v. calu ). Was there something in the bridge that suggested the description and is Scallow a corruption of it? In connexion with Scaldhurst (Ess), earlier Caldehous , Mr Reaney calls our attention to the common prefixing of s to words beginning with c , e.g. squench for quench (Gepp, Essex Dialect Dictionary 152). Note also Scrattage (Mx), Cracheheg '1274Ass . Possibly we have the same dialectal feature here. See further s. n. Poles Pitch supra 190.
