Etymology

This place was Picknoll (c. 1655 SAC 62, 160, 1823 G) and was probably the home of Henry Pyteknolle (1296 SR). The second element is clear (v. cnoll ), but there are too few forms to decide about the first. By the middle of the 19th cent, the name had been corrupted to Parknole and this was changed to Parkminster by the Carthusians who bought the place c. 1870, when they established a monastery there (v. SAC 42, 242).
