Etymology
This is probably the old name of the Tillingbourne, as suggested by Professor Ekwall, cf. s. n. Rother (Western) PN Sx 7. The river-name is from OE scīr , 'bright'. In 1677 (Ct ) we have mention of Shiere Street , with reference to the main road running through the village.
