Etymology
Sutton is Sudtone 1086 DB, Sudton (a )t. Stephen (1318) Ch, Sutton t. Ed 4Ct , Sutton al. Holehurst al. Holehurst at Downe 1595Recov . 'South farm,' v. tun . South with reference to Paddington infra 260 to the north. It later formed a part of the manor of Holdhurst in Cranleigh supra 230, this part being called Holdhurst at Downe to distinguish it from Holdhurst in the Weald (VCH iii, 116).
