Etymology

Hampstead Lane (6″) is Hemstede , Suzhamstede , Suthemstede , Suth Hamestede 13th BM, Hamstede 1229 FF, 1241, 1255Ass , Hemstede 1259Ass , Hemstede by Dorkyng 1314 Ipm, Hampstede by Dorkynge 1350 Ipm, Hampsted Lane 1549 Pat. v. hamstede .The lane was originally outside the present town, and may have referred to some hamlet or dwelling here. The form Suz -, Suth - suggests that originally there was more than one hamstede in the neighbourhood of Dorking.
