Etymology

Cotmandene (6″) is so named in 1385 and 1448Norfolk . 'The valley of the cotmen,' v. denu . This term, which is first found in DB (NED), refers to the tenant of a cot or cottage, the OE  cotsetla or cottar. Cf. the field-names Cotmannemad (Barnes) 1212, Cotmannemed (Chertsey) 1313, Cotmanfurlong (Egham) 1341, Cotmanfeld (Lambeth) 1546, Cotman meade (Merstham) 1522.
