Etymology

'*Ippe 's valley,' v. denu . For the first element cf. PN Wa 214.The evidence given there clearly points to the existence of a strong personal name *Ippe corresponding to the weak Ip (p )a found in BCS 917 and KCD 1281. Ekwall's suggestion that the first element of this name and of Ipsley Wa is OE  yppe , 'hill,' is less probable in view of the number of forms with the genitival -s -. 'Valley of the hill' is not good sense.
