Etymology

Hagden Lane (6″). Cf. Hakedellecroft 1333Cassio , Hagdellefeld ib., Hakdelcrofte 1427 ib., Hakdell croft 1485 ib., Hackdelcrofte 1556AOMB , Hagdell 1606Rental . The same name is found in Hitchin (supra 11), in modern field-names (infra 269, 278, 284, 287) and in Hagdell 1608 Lansdowne in Berkhamsted, Hagdell 1594SP in St Peters. Probably all these names are compounds of OE  haca , 'bend,' etc. and dell , referring to a valley with a sharp bend or turn. Cf. further Hackbridge (PN Sr 41) and Hackfleet (PN Ess 209).
