Etymology

Tolpits is Tolpade 1365 Ipm, c. 1375 Gesta, Tolpath t. Hy 6Arundel , Tollepathe 1529Cassio , Tolpott bridge 1594SP . This is evidently 'toll path,' the modern form being corrupt. It is impossible now to determine why the place was so named.
