Etymology

'Hill where calves were pastured', v. calf (WSax  gen.pl. cealfa ), dūn , cf. Chaldon Sr 42; for the hill itself, v. High Chaldon infra .The family of Harang were here from the time of Hy 2 (Hutch3 1340, 2521), cf. also Thomas Hareng 1199 CartAnt, Terricus Harang 1203 Cur, Phillip Hareng 1227 FF; the same family gave its name to Winterborne Herringstone par., Herrison in Charminster par., and Langton Herring par. (all infra ). East in relation to West Chaldon or Chaldon Boys infra where some of the early forms without affix may strictly belong, v. ēast .
