Etymology

St Nicholas's Church (SY 790831), on the site of an earlier church or churches referred to as æcclesiam de Calvedone 1086 DB, Exon, ecclesie de Chaluedon Herig (sic)1343Ilch , 'church of Chaldon '1501 Pat, ecclesie de Chaldon 1535 VE. In 1861 Hutch3 its dedication was unknown, but it has since received the dedication of the lost church of West Chaldon supra , which according to Hutch3 1 344 was dedicated to St Nicholas.
