Etymology

The Grange (SY 791831), Grange Dairy, (le ) Grange 1464, 1638Weld 1, Farme and Graunge of Easte Chaldon 1583CoRO , (East ) Chaldon Grange 1640, 1703Weld 1, Chaldon Grange Farme 1682Weld 1, v. grange ; like Creech Grange in Steeple par. supra it probably formerly belonged to Bindon Abbey. Some of the above spellings may refer to Grange Farm 1774 Hutch1, 1861 Hutch3, situated 'almost opposite East Chaldon, about half a mile to the north' (Hutch3 1343); and grang '…apud Forsshull 1408Weld 1 may also belong here, v. West Fossil supra . Grange Dairy seems to be referred to as Hr Chaldon 1811 OS.
