Etymology

Strettelegh (lost), Strettelegh 1316 Tab, Strettelee (pullis ), Dowe Streettelee e14 ib, cf. Strethleye , Stretleh l12 Chest, Stretlethfern 1300, 1316 Tab, Stredle l12 Facs (p), 'clearing, or wood, at a Roman road', v. strǣt , lēah , pull 'a pool', fearn 'fern, a ferny place', cf. St Paul's Church infra , 'Watling Street' 140. Dowe is a manorial affix, from the ME  pers.n. Dowe , Dawe , a pet-form of David , cf. Richard son of Doew de Sladehurst 1316 Tab. Chest 310 and Facs 18 identify the twelfth- century forms with Strettle in Mere 52supra , but that is not historically necessary.
