Etymology

'Swine's head', v. swīn 1 , hēafod . Since there is no topography like that of Swineshead WRY 3178, this appears to be an animal-head name of the type discussed at Sr 405. The form -yard (v. geard ) is probably due to stress-shifting in the dial. pronunciation [jed] for head .
