Etymology

'Priests' manor', v. prēost (gen.pl. prēosta ), burh . This was a manor belonging to the abbots of Chester, cf. Spittle Ho, Abbot's Hay infra . By people in Bollington, this village is sometimes called Mansionville , an allusion to the more pretentious style of the place.
