Etymology

'Farm called after Pofa', from an OE  pers.n. Pofa with -ing-, tūn.The pers.n. appears as *Pofa , *Pufa , in Pooley Wa 22, Punish Wood PNK 151, Povenden PNK 407. On the basis of the Pon - spellings, Poynton has been derived from an OE  pers.n. Pūn (a ), as in Poynings Sx 286, v. DEPN s.v., but the form of the name has been confused by orthography. The evidence of the Pov -, Pow - spellings, taken with the few orthographically clear Pou - spellings, suggests that the numerous readings Pon - represent Pou -, mistaken through the similarity of n and u in MSS. The village was The Greene 1743Dow , Poynton Green 1831 Bry, 1842 OS, v. grēne 2 .
