Etymology

'Thorn-tree farm', v. þorn , þyrne , tūn . Basingwerk abbey Fl, had a grange here until 1465AddCh 6278, cf. Thornton Grange and Little Grange infra . The manorial affixes are the Christian name of Mathew (OFr  Mahieu , v. Mayowse 3 29) de Thornton tenant here c.1252 and the surname Hough (cf. Hough 364) of the family of Richard del Hogh c.1329 Orm2 ii549.
