Etymology

A surname found originally in Grappenhall, and afterwards frequent at Chester. Leycester (1666) cites the place as 'Derewallshaw , id est Thelwallshaw ', Orm2 i 472, cf. Thelwall 138supra . The p.n. is either 'wood at the spring used by wild animals', from dēor , wella , wælla (cf. Wilderspool 145infra ), or 'Dēorwald's wood' from the OE  pers.n. Dēorwald and sceaga .
