Etymology

, 1774 PRHtsd , Sopehowse als. Blackhowse 1641 WillY, Sopehouse 1705 Arm, probably 'a house wheresoap was made', from OE  sāp , ME  sope , hūs, but it is possibly anadaptation of Sawghous in Hertysheade 1563 Arm, Sowghouse 1567 ib , in which case it is from sogh ' swamp ' ; topographically , however , the identification is unlikely .
