Etymology

( local ) , possibly alluding to the ancient turf - cut maze infra . These mazes were often called City of Troy or Troy Town or The Walls of Troy . Popular lore derived such names from the supposedly complicated structure of the walls of Troy , so formed that an enemy , once inside , could neither find his way into the city nor out again . However , The City is sometimes used ironically of a very small group of houses , cf . The City in Empingham .
