Etymology

'The field', v. vengi . OScand  vengi is a derivative of ON  vangr 'an in-field'. The earliest reference to this toponym is in the bounds of the Ayston charter of 1046 where we find into wenge forde (v. The Ayston Charter). It is uncertain whether at this date wenge applied to a field or to a settlement which had developed there.
