Etymology

'Martin's woodland glade or clearing', v. lēah , vápnatak , hundred . The OE  pers.n. Martin (originally MedLat  Martinus ) appears also in Martinsthorpe, in the earlier Martinestoch and in martines (v. Ayston f.ns. (b)), all in Martinsley Hundred. These p.ns. are, no doubt, to be assoociated with the same Martin who gave his name to the hundred.
