Etymology

, 1774 Hutch1 , part of the main Purbeck ridge and so named from the many tumuli , v. beorg , dūn ; in fact according to Hutch 3 1 689 there are ' in all eighteen barrows clearly distinguishable, all lying closetogether ' , and according to local tradition there were originally nineteen ( R.J.S. ) .
