Etymology

Gilda may be a pet-form for such OE  names as Ēadgīld , Ingild , Swǣfgild and the name mean 'Gilda's tree,' but it is difficult to be sure. The forms with ing are so late in appearing that connexion with the word yielding is very unlikely.
