Etymology

The same name apparently as saltherpe 956 (BCS 922) in the bounds of Brokenborough. Ekwall (Studies 82) takes both names as deriving from an OE  *sealt-hearpe used of a riddle for sifting salt, but has no suggestion to offer as to its local application.Note also South Harp in South Petherton (So), Sutharpe 1327 SR.
