The name is probably identical in origin with Steep (Ha), (la ) Stupe c. 1200 Winton, 1316 FA, la Stiepe 1230, Stype 1233 Selborne, le Stepe 1255 HMC Var iv in Herriard (Ha) and la Stupe 1270 Selborne in Selborne (ib.), from OE  *stīepe , 'steep place,' from stēap , 'steep.' Cf. also la Blakestupe (1257For ) in Bedwyn.
